Micah was up bright and early ready to "do my alphabet book". Fortunately, the mailman delivered our daily alphabet letter yesterday in the form of the October issue of
Wild Animal Baby, a magazine published by the National Wildlife Federation. We read all about Katie the Koala and noticed her fluffy ears, as well as how Katie and her mom hung out in trees together eating leaves.
Just as we were reading about swallows, we heard the unmistakable "Trit-tweet, trit-tweet, trit-tweet" of a swallow in the woods nearby. Another benefit of taking our "lessons" outside in this beautiful, barely-fall weather.
After Micah practiced tracing and printing the letter "K" in her journal, the much-relished craft time began. We modeled our koala painting activity on the one in Wild Animal Baby, with a few differences.
K is for Koala Painting Craft
Ingredients
Cotton swabs
Small piece of soft black fabric
Liquid glue (Elmer's is fine)
Crayons or colored pencils
Black and white acrylic paint
Scissors
Instructions
1. Look at photos of koalas and notice the colors and texture of their fur, noses, and bodies.

2. Color picture of tree in brown crayon or colored pencil.

3. Choose a bright color to color the "K" and then another color for "is for koala".
4. Set aside cotton swabs and explain that you will use them to paint your koala by "dabbing" and "spreading" paint to create fuzzy fur..
5. Put two squirts of black paint and two squirts of white, and then use cotton swabs to dab first black paint and then white paint into furry area of koala. Layer and experiment with strokes to add fuzzy effect.
6. Add a dab of glue to the nose area on the koala and then stick the fabric atop the glue.
And your koala friend is ready to dry in a favorite sunny location.
