The holiday season can be a time for giving and loving. Over the years, I've found that the amount of time spent in stores purchasing plastic toys from factories in China is inversely related to the satisfaction I derive from giving and receiving holiday gifts. There are a plethora of ethical reasons for handmade holidays as well as a bevy of traditional and historic reasons- but ours tend to be a combination of all the above and more.
Homeschooling your kids means that every hour spent shopping is an hour in which they learn to consume, buy, and associate the holidays with spending money. It is my sincere hope that the holidays will be associated with making, creating, and giving a little piece of your heart and soul (rather than your wallet) to family and friends. Handmade holidays automatically reduces the number of gifts and increases the quality of gifts.
